About IEM Katowice 2023
IEM Katowice 2023 was an important Counter-Strike competition held in Katowice, Poland. The event took place from February 1 to February 12, 2023. The cash prize was a sizeable $1,000,000 USD. Breakdown of the Tournament Format
The tournament was divided into three distinct phases:
Play-in Stage (February 1-3): This stage featured 16 teams in a double elimination bracket. It started with best-of-1 (BO1) matches and from there on, all matches were best-of-3 (BO3). The eight best teams proceeded to the Group Stage.
Group Stage (February 4-7): Two double-elimination format (GSL) groups constituted the Group Stage. There were 8 teams that directly qualified for this phase and another 8 from the play-in. The matches here were all best-of-3. The top three teams from each group moved onto the Playoffs. Leading teams got a direct pass to the Semifinals, and the next top teams advanced to the Quarterfinals distinguished as either ‘High Seeds’ or ‘Low Seeds’.
Playoffs (February 10-12): Quarterfinals and Semifinals took the best-of-3 format while the Grand Final was best-of-5. The Playoffs took place in the full-capacity Spodek Arena.

An assortment of teams directly invited and teams who secured their spots from the play-in stages participated. These included Ninjas in Pyjamas, Cloud9, compLexity Gaming, Evil Geniuses, Fnatic, Grayhound Gaming, Sprout, OG, ENCE, BIG, FURIA Esports, MIBR, paiN Gaming, IHC ESPORTS, Team Spirit, and Permitta Esports. The winning team would not only earn $400,000 but also a direct invite to IEM Cologne 2023.

All matches from play-in and group stages were simultaneously broadcasted on ESL’s primary and secondary Twitch channels. This allowed fans to track several games at once.

In the upper bracket of Group B—with the first game being between Heroic and Vitality—Heroic dominated over Vitality with a series win of 2-0. The first map was Inferno, chosen by Vitality. Both teams had several exchanges. However, Heroic emerged victorious with a score of 9-6. In the proceedings, TeSeS accomplished an Ace.
