Updated Framework for The International 2025
Valve made public recently that they are modifying the structure of The International 2025. A contemporary interpretation of the Swiss format has been earmarked to be a part of the revised Road to The International, which proceeds in two segments. The purpose of such alterations, Valve elaborates, is to let every round of the match hold significance.
The International has seen numerous alterations over the course of its recent past, including a decision to distribute the developmental work for the Battle Pass over a period of time. Among the many changes, one notable one is the renewed Group Stage.
Alterations to the Tournament Format
The International 2025, renowned as Dota 2’s topmost esports event, has confirmed numerous updates, such as the revised format and conducting it in Germany after nearly 15 years since its inception in 2011. Here are some more details:
- The traditional group stage is now replaced with a fresh Swiss Stage which will occur from September 4 to 7. It will feature 16 teams involved in the best-of-three rounds. The teams are matched based on their win-loss records, ensuring balanced competitions.
- Four victories will allow the teams to qualify for the playoffs, while four defeats will result in them getting eliminated. After the Swiss Stage, only 3 teams will proceed to the playoffs, and 3 teams will be eliminated. The leftover 10 teams will contest in a one-of-a-kind elimination round.
- The Playoffs scheduled from September 11 to 14 at Hamburg’s Barclays Arena will embrace a double-elimination bracket. All rounds will be the best-of-three, with the exception of the Grand Final, which will be a best-of-five.
Highlights of the Event
The International will be back in Germany, more specifically in Hamburg’s Barclays Arena. The event duration will be from September 4 to 14, 2025. The playoffs will be executed in front of a live audience. A total of 16 teams are expected to partake in the event. The process behind team selection is through direct invites, regional, and open qualifiers. However, Valve has not yet shed light on the specifics of the invite process. The qualifiers are susceptible to happen somewhere near June 2025.
The adjustment to the format makes the number of playoff teams less than the ones present in previous years. This increases competition and removes any purposeless matches.
Historical Importance
TI14 being conducted in Germany after its first event in 2011 that took place in Cologne is a significant event. Hamburg will be the eighth city worldwide to host this prestigious tournament.
Info for Fans and Ticketing
Tickets for the event, offering both single-day and multi-day facilities, will start selling from April 15, 2025. The aim of Valve is to enhance the fan experience by ensuring clear schedules and providing matches that have real stakes.
The International 2025 aligns modern competition via its Swiss format and returns to its roots in Germany, delivering a monumental experience to Dota 2 fans across the globe.
