FunPlus Phoenix Terminates League of Legends Operations
FunPlus Phoenix (FPX), the 2019 world champions of League of Legends, have confirmed their withdrawal from the League of Legends Pro League (LPL) to be effective from January 1, 2026. Reports are also surfacing about the potential departure of RNG, another old and prestigious Chinese organization. These changes correspond with a broader restructuring of the LPL
FPX’s Journey in LPL
FPX first joined the LPL back in December 2017. Their time in the league was relatively short but memorable, as they achieved international success by 2019, just two years after their entry. Their most prominent accomplishment occurred in the 2019 season when they won the World Championship.
Key Achievements in 2019
FPX hit their peak in 2019 following the incorporation of DoinB (mid) and Tian (jungle), which took them from being a mid-tier team in 2018 to LPL Summer Split winners in 2019. In the 2019 World Championship, they not only ruled Group B but also eliminated Fnatic, Invictus Gaming, and G2 Esports consecutively to secure China’s second consecutive world title. Notably, DoinB’s unconventional champion pool, including Twisted Fate and Nautilus, played a significant role in their success.
Post-Championship Performances
After their championship glory, FPX faced difficulty in maintaining its winning streak. Unfortunately, they could not qualify for Worlds in 2020 due to inconsistent performance and getting eliminated by Invictus Gaming. Their decision to leave was likely influenced by declining engagement, disappointing results, and high operational costs, although their farewell messages primarily expressed gratitude toward the community.
LPL Undergoing Restructuring
Alongside FPX’s exit, the LPL is undergoing a restructuring phase, aiming to fine-tune the competition schedule and respond to the waning popularity. The league has started repurchasing team slots, and FPX has willingly agreed to this process. If reports are accurate, RNG may follow FPX in departing from the league in 2026, underlining the substantial changes coming to LPL.
Additional Information
In 2017, FPX acquired an official league spot that eventually led them to international success. After their high point in 2019, a steady decline in their performance led to them voluntarily withdrawing from high-level play. The decision to repurchase the LPL slot aligns with other Chinese esports organizations rethinking their commitments due to shifts in the market and reduced international performance. League statements assure efforts will be made for the safe placement of players and completion of the repurchase process.
The Significance of FPX’s Exit
FPX’s departure marks a significant moment in the LPL’s history. Just six years after FPX’s remarkable rise and world championship triumph, one of China’s most noteworthy organizations is leaving the stage.
