Understanding MMR in Dota 2.
In Dota 2, the Matchmaking Rating (MMR) serves as a metric to gauge a player’s understanding and position in the game, which is of fundamental importance to both beginners and experienced players who aim for higher playing ranks, like Immortal..
What is MMR?
MMR, which stands for Matchmaking Rating, is a numerical indicator showing your skills in Dota 2. It is tied directly to your visible rank medal, changing after each ranked match you play.
How does MMR function?
The rise or fall of your MMR is entirely dependent on the outcomes of matches, rather than individual performance. Winning a ranked solo match increases your MMR by around 20-30 MMR points while losing reduces it by the same amount. For those playing in a party, the MMR usually gains and loses around 20 MMR per match.
Confidence Intervals and MMR Variation
Dota 2 has a system that uses a confidence interval to estimate the certainty of your true skill level. Those with fewer ranked games have less confidence, so their MMR could fluctuate more significantly per match. As you participate in more matches, your confidence index goes up, which results in smaller MMR modifications.
Separate MMR Values
In Dota 2, two separate MMR values are tracked; one for Core MMR intended for those in carry and mid-lane roles and the other for Support MMR designed for off-lane and support roles. Noteworthy is the fact that your performance in each role has an independent effect on the respective MMR.
Commencement of Ranked Matches
In order to start participating in ranked matches and earn MMR, players are required to engage in at least 100 hours of Dota 2 play in any game mode. With completion of calibration matches, your initial MMR is assigned and your rank medal is then displayed for all to see.
