Recent Controversy Surrounding Team Liquid
Team Liquid has recently experienced a significant disruption within its organization following a contentious post made by one of its players on social media. The incident has been linked to the decision taken by Honda to end its sponsorship agreement with Team Liquid, a significant blow financially to the team.
Details of the Incident
The incident originated from a social media post by Lucas “DiasLucas” Dias, a player representing Team Liquid in the Rainbow Six Siege team. DiasLucas posted a GIF image associated with an atomic bombing on May 13, 2025, following a defeat against the Japan-based CAG Osaka during a world tournament. This particular post was deemed offensive, especially considering Honda’s background, and the historical significance of atomic bombings in Japan during World War II.
Honda’s Reaction
Honda responded by expressing its disapproval with Team Liquid and the player involved. Despite the post’s deletion, an apology from Team Liquid, and the implementation of preventative measures, Honda elected to terminate the sponsorship. According to the American division of Honda Motor Co., Dias’ behavior was considered as incompatible with Honda’s corporate values and fundamental principle of “Respect for Humanity”.
The Impact on Team Liquid
The end of the partnership between Honda and Team Liquid has resulted in a considerable financial setback for the team. The collaboration, which had been in effect for six years, was reportedly worth around $3-6 million annually across various esports titles, including Rainbow Six Siege, League of Legends, and Dota 2. Honda acted as the title sponsor for Team Liquid’s League of Legends team and produced numerous commercials featuring players from the organization.
Team Liquid’s Response to the Incident
In response to the incident, Team Liquid has taken several measures such as;
- Fining DiasLucas the equivalent of four months’ salary and mandatory completion of media and sensitivity training
- Donating their $12,000 prize winnings from RELOAD, along with Lucas’ fine, to charity by the Rainbow Six squad
- Requirement for all Team Liquid players and coaches to attend new sensitivity and media training within a span of six months. The incident with DiasLucas will be used as a case study during this training.
Despite these measures, Team Liquid’s management has shown support towards their player.
Viktor Goossens Statement
“We have taken action, and we believe in accountability. But we also believe in fairness and context… This kid deserves to play” stated Victor Goossens, who likely holds a leadership role within Team Liquid.
Formal Apology
The team also extended an official apology to the fans in Japan, their sponsors, and the players of CAG Osaka. It was noted that the CAG Osaka players accepted the apology with grace and understanding and regarded it as a mistake rather than a deliberate insult.
